The Phillip Muhammad Courage Scholarships
Courage Scholarships for the 2025-2026 School have been awarded, and additional scholarships are being organized. See the Winners:
Brother Phillip exemplified extraordinary public service and exemplary contributions in Huntsville, Alabama. Courage was one of Brother Phil's profound characteristics.
He performed voluminous acts of courage, faith, and leadership, which hundreds of community members witnessed and testified about.
Remembering Brother Phillip's good works allows others to do good deeds, be charitable, and exemplify courage, leadership, and faith. Let's continue the legacy by encouraging future action to restore our communities.
Brother Phillip was best known for his efforts to STOP the KILLING of Black men.
2025-2026 Phase I ELIGIBILITY
Must be headed to any college in the United States for the 2025-2026 School Year.
Must live in Madison or Limestone County, AL.
You must have faced an obstacle or be at risk in some way.
You must write an essay that contains two parts: a. Write about an obstacle or at-risk situation you faced, and b. If you could, how would you put an end to Black male homicide in the United States? The essay should be between 500 and 1,000 words.
You must be willing to share your essay at the Brother Phillip Life and Legacy event on September 21, 2024.
Scholarships range from $250 -$1,000.
Must apply by September 16, 2024, by 11:59 p.m.
One or two letters of recommendation must be submitted from any of the following (pastor, teacher, counselor, employer, principal, community leader). The student must not submit the letters. The letters must be emailed directly to admin@risingsouthliteracyschool.org. The recommenders should put your name in the subject line.
You must upload a headshot of yourself with your application. This means you must email the headshot to admin@risingsouthliteracyschool.org, and put your name in the subject line.
There is no GPA or ACT score requirement to apply.
Winners/runners-up will be notified no later than September 18th.

Your application will be completed when all of the following have been received:
One letter of recommendation
Your 250-1,000 word essay
Your headshot
Your Transcript
